Paul Berard Photography: Sojourn

Portraiture

If there is one modern day term I cannot abide by, it would be 'photogenic'. People misunderstand and misuse this term on a regular basis, referring to themselves as being unphotogenic, an idea that simply does not work in my mind. The end quality of the subject is almost always in the hands and mind of the photographer, which relies on their knowledge of a wide range of factors - film type, exposure & metering, posing, environment, camera & lens selection - to make the subject as strong as possible in the face of all obstacles.

I won't pretend that every session I've ever done has gone perfectly. There are personality conflicts, the misunderstood requests, crunched schedules, and the occassion bout of serious weather that just won't play fair. These are all factors that have to be played on and around to make the session work. If you have someone that doesn't understand what's going on in your head or noticing that the pose isn't right, well...it's not going to function as well as it could. This is where people begin to think of themselves of unphotogenic, when the truth is that they are just being visually misrepresented.
