| PBP Entries at the 2007 Showcase of Arts during the Saskatoon Ex | |||
| As I headed into preparing the prints for this year's exhibition, I found myself facing a host of strange and new information. Digital photography played a big role in this year's competition, in some ways limiting the size of competitors prints as they produced their work from home, driving people down a category or having them enter the snapshot category. While not a bad thing, this does change the playing field for those still entering the upper categories, and led me to think hard about whether a themed entry was the answer. In the end, I elected to treat the Showcase of Arts like I have in the past, with a broad range of images, speaking to subjects and concepts. I would achieve two things this year: The Honorary Mention for the Advanced Amateur category, and my highest score in a competition to date! | |||

Magnolias Taken from my many excursions into the downtown core of Vancouver, these opening blossoms were covered with raindrops while I worked my way through a long day hammering about on Robson street. Score: 89 |

Call Waiting This newly installed telephone booth was a sharp contrast to the Water Street environment. I loved this for its muted commentary and for having a palpable sense of something yet to occur. This scan does not show it well, but there is a vehicle in the lower right that also contributes to this feeling. Score: 89 |

Electric Third Avenue One night, I awoke to rain throwing itself into my bedroom pane. I looked out the window and knew that heading out into this storm would produce some good work, and so, armed with my new 17mm lens, began learning to use it in a near torrential downpour. The crop on this could be tighter, but I was new to the lens, and not really paying full attention as I was attempting to not get killed in the road. Maybe next rainfall I can play in traffic some more. ;) Score: 83 |

Quality Control I took this a while back, but always thought it an interesting shot. The crop at the top is a bit off, but with only one lens to use, not bad overall. I liked the subject material and elected to use Afga Scala (r.i.p.) for that elegant, yet aged look I thought it deserved. These signs have now been partially obscured by newer advertisments, so their preservation in my work is something I am quite proud of. Score: 95 |

Frame Story Every year, I try to have a "just cause I can" entry. This year, it's this print, which I find absolutely hilarious. The building in the background is along the river in Saskatoon and I used to take semi-regular walks with a friend along this area, taking in the new sights and graffiti. On this particular day, I noted the addition of several Polaroid prints, taped up to objects along the pathway. Each shot depicted a building or view in the area, but there was no other visible purpose or meaning to the work. Stepping off the pathway and pulling out my gear, I began realizing what I could do with this when I got to this one, depicting the old water plant at the south end of the downtown. I love that I did not take these, but found them, borrowing their work in my frame, to frame their subject, and bring them together again. Score: 87 |
